Athlete of the Month

Lauren Fleshman is an accomplished runner who competes at the international level in middle distance track. Here are her thoughts about her personal sports nutrition strategy:

“My sports nutrition is all about responsibility, quality and timing. When possible, I try to eat foods grown locally and that are in season. I eat foods that I enjoy and have learn to enjoy healthy foods. But most importantly, for my athletics, I time my meals so that I have energy when I need it and can recover quickly for the next run.”

Birthday September 26, 1981
Biggest athletic accomplishment Led the United States to a Bronze Medal at the Cross Country World Championships.
Favorite thing about training It’s not always about who works the hardest, but who trains the smartest. There is an upper limit to how much running and pounding the body can take and the rest of the gains come from knowing the nuances of your body.
Least favorite thing about training It seems like training should be a simple equation: do something repetitively and you master the task. It drives me nuts when I repeat a workout several weeks later and I don’t improve.
Favorite PowerBar product/flavor POWERBAR® PRIA® 110 Plus – Mint Chocolate Cookie, POWERBAR® Nut Naturals, and POWERBAR® Gels - Chocolate.
Unusual training regimens My philosophy is “be yourself, to be great.” If I’m happy with life, I’ll train better and run faster. Therefore, I include some unusual “to do’s” for my weekly training log. This list includes a weekly burger-and-brew night, spontaneous training runs in the mountains, satiating my sweet tooth, and maintaining enough flexibility in my training schedule to be available for my husband and friends. Not everyone is cut out for weighing their food and sleeping 12 hours a day. If I did that, I’d be less successful because it isn’t me.
Biggest obstacle/challenge overcome to date Last time I missed the Olympics, I was a big baby about it and I let that one failure slow my overall progress. Learning how to cope with failure means taking a hard look in the mirror and then moving on. The last part, moving on with it, is the hardest for me. I can easily practice analysis to the point of paralysis.
Superstitions and/or rituals for competition I am completely un-superstitious. I stick to a basic schedule, but I actively fight the urge to make unnecessary habits. My greatest races come when I go to the line flexible and ready for anything, with a deep sense that what I am about to do comes from within. Tying my shoes a certain way or wearing holey underwear would take away from that.
Favorite hobbies Camping! Everything is better outdoors.
Community involvement I get a lot of pleasure from being an athletic advisor and mentor for young athletes. I do what I can to promote the sport of running and improve the sport.
One fact no one knows about you I was a huge tomboy and a very late bloomer. But in my senior year, I was voted Homecoming Queen in a scene that could have come from Revenge of the Nerds, breaking a 10-year streak of Cheerleaders. Sweet revenge for years of being called a runner geek!

Feelings about competition Bring it on! A fight to the finish is thrilling no matter the outcome.
How I got invovled with sport? I grew up with a bunch of active kids in my neighborhood and I was insanely competitive. My Grandpa bought me a softball glove and that got me started in organized sports. Being 4’10” until I was 13 allowed me to walk to first every time, and I was so fast I’d steal all the way home.
Favorite workout music Classic Rock and unusual soundtracks like “Winged Migration”.
